Q: You got your first taste of top-level kabaddi last season. What was going through your mind the moment you stepped onto the mat?
Abhiraj: Stepping onto the mat for the first time at the top level was a surreal moment. There was a mix of excitement and nerves, but more than anything, I felt proud to represent my team and all the hard work that got me there.
Q: Coming in as a young player, did you feel pressure to prove yourself immediately?
Abhiraj: Yes, there was definitely some pressure, but I tried to channel it positively. I focused on giving my best in every opportunity rather than thinking too much about proving myself instantly.
Q: What were the biggest lessons you took away from last season?
Abhiraj: Last season taught me the importance of consistency, patience, and staying mentally strong. At this level, even small mistakes can cost you, so learning to stay focused throughout the game was key.
Q: Kabaddi is as mental as it is physical. How do you deal with self-doubt or tough moments?
Abhiraj: I try to stay calm and trust my training. Talking to my coaches and teammates also helps a lot. I remind myself why I started and focus on improving rather than overthinking mistakes.
Q: Physically, the jump to professional kabaddi is intense. What has your training been like to stay match-ready?
Abhiraj: My training includes strength conditioning, agility drills, and a lot of mat practice. Recovery is also very important, so I make sure to focus on proper rest, diet, and injury prevention.
Q: From a strategy point of view, what do you focus on when you’re on the mat?
Abhiraj: I focus on reading the opposition, maintaining awareness, and executing the team’s plan. Timing and decision-making are crucial, so I try to stay alert and adapt quickly.
Q: What is one area of your game you are working hardest to improve right now?
Abhiraj: I’m currently working on improving my fitness and stamina, along with developing new skills, so that I can maintain high performance and consistency throughout the entire match.
Q: Being part of the NYP setup, how has the environment helped your growth?
Abhiraj: The NYP setup has provided a highly competitive and supportive environment where I get to learn from experienced coaches and senior players. It has helped me develop my skills, improve my game awareness, and grow both as a player and as an individual.
Q: Off the mat, how do you stay grounded through all the highs and lows?
Abhiraj: I stay connected with my family and close friends. They keep me grounded and remind me to stay humble. Along with that, I also spend some time on spiritual practices, and I enjoy playing mobile games, which help me relax and stay focused.
Q: What does wearing the team jersey mean to you?
Abhiraj: Wearing the team jersey is a huge honor. It represents responsibility, pride, and the trust the team has in me. I always aim to give my 100% whenever I wear it.
