Every season of the Pro Kabaddi League comes with new faces, fresh energy, and stories waiting to unfold. For the Tamil Thalaivas, last season saw one such story take shape in the form of Rohit Beniwal, a New Young Player (NYP) who made his presence felt when it mattered most.

Joining the squad as a young raider, Rohit didn’t always start on the mat but when his moment came, he made sure it counted. Often stepping in as the third raider in crucial situations, he brought a sense of composure and intent that stood out in high-pressure moments.
What defined his season wasn’t just the points he scored, but how he approached the game- prepared, patient, and quietly confident.
For Rohit, the role of a substitute wasn’t a limitation, it was a responsibility.
“Last season, I was mostly used as a substitute, so I made sure I was mentally ready for any situation—to go in, score, and contribute to the team,” he says. “Initially, I was a bit nervous because of the crowd. But once I got into my first raid and found my rhythm, that fear disappeared.”
Instead of feeling pressure, he focused on readiness.
“The only thing on my mind was when my opportunity would come. I kept telling myself that whenever I get that chance, I have to use it properly.”
Every player has that one moment of clarity, the point where belief replaces doubt.
For Rohit, that moment came at home in Chennai, facing strong opponents like U Mumba and Bengaluru Bulls.
“Even though I got limited time, I used my skills well and scored important points. That’s when I realised that I belong here and this is my game.”
As a raider, split-second decisions define outcomes. And Rohit’s approach is simple, but effective.
“In must-score situations, my only thought is that the team needs points, and I have to deliver. I try to score within the first few seconds and return quickly.”
His ability to read the defence also plays a key role.
“I observe who is aggressive and who is defensive. I wait for a small mistake and the moment it happens, I take my chance and return safely.”
One of the standout aspects of Rohit’s game last season was his calmness under pressure, a trait he credits to self-belief.
“My calmness comes from my confidence. I trust my preparation and my abilities. When you believe in yourself, you naturally stay calm.”
Just as he was building momentum, an untimely injury disrupted his season, something that tested him both physically and mentally.
“It was very disappointing. Injuries affected my performance, and I knew I could have done better if I had stayed fit.”
The recovery phase wasn’t easy either.
“I had to start from zero physically and rebuild my strength. Mentally, it was tougher because I had to stay patient and watch the team play without me. But I used that time to work on myself and come back stronger.”
Being part of the NYP setup meant more than just an opportunity on the mat, it changed things off it too.
“When I signed, I was very happy. It gave me a platform to prove myself and make my village proud. My family was facing financial difficulties, and after signing, I was able to support them. That meant a lot to me.”
"The team and management invested their trust in me and thats what keeps me going till date".
With lessons learned and hunger intact, Rohit is clear about what lies ahead for himself and the team.
“This new season is going to be different. We’ve learned from our mistakes and will come back stronger. Our goal is to qualify for the playoffs, reach the finals, and win the title.”
Tamil Thalaivas is not some random team. We are the best and we will be on top next season.
And on a personal note, he leaves no doubt about his intent:
“I have performed well, but I know I can do even better. This season, I will show who I am.”
